How to Choose a Japanese Kanji Learning App

Choose a kanji app around what you actually want to practise: recognising characters, writing them, reading words, or reviewing for the JLPT. Check how feedback works, which functions require internet access, whether your device is supported, and what is free before subscribing. This guide is published by YoruLearn, the maker of one such app; it is not an independent ranking.

Six things to compare before you download

NeedQuestions to askTry this
WritingCan you write with a finger or stylus? Is practice guided or from memory?Write 山 without looking, then compare it with the model.
FeedbackDoes the app recognise the character, check stroke order, or both? What happens when it is unsure?Test a careful attempt and an intentionally different character.
VocabularyAre characters connected to real words, readings and meanings?Look for 学校 and its reading, がっこう.
ReviewCan you revisit difficult items instead of restarting a list?Check what happens to an item you get wrong.
Offline useWhich features need a connection or an initial download?Prepare the app online, then test the feature in airplane mode.
Cost and devicesWhich features are free or paid? Does the listing support your device?Check the current store listing and subscription terms.

Recognition is not the same as stroke-order grading

A recogniser estimates which character you wrote; a stroke-order reference shows the intended sequence. Neither automatically means an app diagnoses every stroke error. For example, 日 and 目 are easy to confuse when a line is missing: check both the recognised result and the reference.

Practise first with the confusable kanji guide and stroke-order rules.

Where YoruLearn fits—and where to check

YoruLearn is our Japanese-learning app for iPhone and iPad. It includes guided writing and recognition-based handwriting evaluation, character study and review. Its dictionary offers kanji-coverage filters, which are Premium features; dictionary search is free. See how familiar kanji can connect to vocabulary.

The Japanese recognition model needs an initial download; recognition can work offline after that. Recognition can make mistakes, so compare with the character reference. Some features require Premium, and device requirements and current prices should be checked in the App Store listing. We do not claim YoruLearn is the best choice for every learner.

A five-minute trial you can repeat with any app

  1. Choose three beginner characters, such as 日, 月 and 山.
  2. Look at each character’s meaning and writing reference.
  3. Close the reference and write each one; inspect the feedback.
  4. Find a word containing one character and check its complete reading.
  5. Ask whether you would return to this practice tomorrow, and whether the cost fits your budget.

No app needed for a first trial: use our printable kanji checklist and N5 practice hub.

Common questions

Should beginners practise handwriting immediately?

A small amount can help you notice character structure, but balance writing with reading and vocabulary according to your goals.

Do all kanji apps work offline?

No. Check whether your chosen features need a model download or network connection, and test them before travelling.

Is this an independent comparison?

No. YoruLearn publishes this guide and makes one of the apps described. Use the checklist to assess other apps independently too.
