5 Common Mistakes

  1. Using あつい (暑い) for hot food/drink. あつい for weather uses 暑い. For hot objects/food/drinks, use 熱い (also あつい). Both have the same reading — the kanji and context clarify which is meant.
  2. Using さむい for cold water or food. さむい is for cold air/weather only. For cold objects and drinks, use つめたい.
  3. Saying あめをふる instead of あめがふる. Rain "falls" with subject particle が: あめがふっています.
  4. Confusing かぜ (wind) and かぜ (cold, illness). Same reading, different kanji: 風 (wind) vs 風邪 (cold). Context usually makes it clear — if someone says かぜをひいた, they caught a cold, not a wind.
  5. Mixing up てんき and きこう. てんき (天気) = today's weather. きこう (気候) = climate / long-term weather patterns. N5 uses てんき.
