Section 1: Grammar (Questions 1–15)

Choose the answer that best completes each sentence. Tap to reveal the answer and explanation.

Q1. 毎日練習した___、まだ上手くなれない。
A) のに   B) ために   C) ように   D) けれど

Answer: A — のに
のに expresses frustrated contrast: "despite doing X, Y happened contrary to expectation." The speaker practiced every day yet still cannot improve — the result contradicts the effort. ために means "in order to" (purpose) or "because of" (cause). ように expresses a goal or manner. けれど is a neutral "but" without the emotional weight of のに.

Q2. 彼は医者___病気のことを全然知らない。
A) として   B) にとって   C) のくせに   D) によって

Answer: C — のくせに
くせに means "despite being [something that should know better]" with a critical or reproachful nuance. As a doctor, he should know about illness — but he does not. This is exactly the gap くせに targets. として = in the role of (neutral). にとって = from the perspective of. によって = depending on / by means of.

Q3. あの映画は何度見ても感動する___だ。
A) もの   B) こと   C) はず   D) わけ

Answer: A — もの
ものだ expresses a universal truth or natural tendency: "it is the kind of thing that moves you no matter how many times you watch it." ことだ expresses advice or obligation. はずだ expresses logical expectation. わけだ expresses a conclusion or logical result from evidence.

Q4. 試験の結果___、奨学金がもらえるかどうかが決まります。
A) について   B) によって   C) にとって   D) に対して

Answer: B — によって
によって here means "depending on" — whether the scholarship is awarded depends on the exam result. について = about / concerning (topic). にとって = from the perspective of (personal standpoint). に対して = toward / in contrast to (target of an action or feeling).

Q5. 先生が来る前に宿題を終わらせて___。
A) ておきたい   B) てみたい   C) てしまいたい   D) てほしい

Answer: A — ておきたい
ておく = do in advance for a future situation. Finishing the homework before the teacher arrives is exactly this kind of purposeful preparation. てみたい = want to try (experimental). てしまいたい = want to get it completely done (possible but less natural here). てほしい = want someone else to do it (different subject).

Q6. 日本語が上手く話せる___なりたいです。
A) ことに   B) ように   C) ために   D) はずに

Answer: B — ように
ようになる expresses a gradual change toward an ability or state: "I want to become someone who can speak Japanese well." The goal is a state of ability (話せる = potential form), which triggers ように rather than ために. ために attaches to volitional plain-form verbs for direct purpose. はずに is not a standard construction.

Q7. 彼女は来ない___。昨日そう言っていた。
A) らしい   B) ようだ   C) みたいだ   D) そうだ(appearance)

Answer: A — らしい
The speaker heard from her yesterday that she is not coming — this is external information received from a source. らしい expresses hearsay or information obtained from outside. ようだ and みたいだ are used for evidence-based inference from direct observation. Appearance-そうだ attaches to verb/adjective stems based on visual cues, not reported information.

Q8. この問題は子供___解けない。
A) しか   B) だけ   C) ばかり   D) さえ

Answer: D — さえ
さえ = "even" — including an extreme case. "Even a child cannot solve this problem" (implying adults certainly cannot either). しか requires a negative verb and means "only" with a sense of insufficiency — 子供しか解けない would mean "only children can solve it" (opposite meaning). だけ = only (neutral). ばかり = nothing but / excessive.

Q9. 彼は忙しい___、いつも手伝ってくれる。
A) のに   B) ものの   C) くせに   D) ながら

Answer: A — のに
"Despite being busy, he always helps me" — the result (helping) is surprising given the circumstance (being busy). のに expresses this emotional contrast. ものの is more formal and less emotionally charged. くせに carries criticism — inappropriate here since helping is positive. ながら = while doing simultaneously (both actions at the same time).

Q10. 出発の時間になった___、彼がまだ来ない。
A) ものの   B) にもかかわらず   C) のに   D) くせに

Answer: C — のに
"Despite it being departure time, he still has not come." The speaker's expectation (he should be here by now) is frustrated. のに captures this emotional gap. にもかかわらず is more formal and could also work but sounds stiffer. ものの is more literary. くせに requires criticizing the subject — not appropriate for being late per se.

Q11. 環境問題___考えなければならない。
A) について   B) によって   C) に対して   D) にとって

Answer: A — について
について = about / concerning (topic marker). "We must think about environmental issues." This is the most natural topic marker for discussing, thinking about, or writing about a subject. によって = depending on / by means of. に対して = toward / against (target of action or feeling). にとって = from the perspective of.

Q12. 会議で決まった___に従って行動します。
A) こと   B) もの   C) はず   D) わけ

Answer: A — こと
決まったことに従って = "in accordance with what was decided." こと nominalizes the verb phrase to refer to the decision as a thing/fact. もの nominalizes with a more physical or general-truth nuance. はず expresses expectation. わけ expresses logical reason or conclusion — not a simple nominalization of events.

Q13. 彼女はいつも笑っている。本当に悲しい___。
A) ものだ   B) はずだ   C) らしい   D) ようだ

Answer: B — はずだ
The speaker reasons from evidence (she always smiles) that she must truly be sad underneath. はずだ = logical expectation based on reasoning. "She must really be sad" (logical deduction). ものだ = general truth / natural state. らしい = apparently (hearsay from outside). ようだ = seems (sensory evidence) — possible but はずだ better captures the logical inference here.

Q14. 日本語を始めて半年___、N3に合格した。
A) にしては   B) として   C) によっては   D) に関して

Answer: A — にしては
にしては = "for / considering" — the result is unexpectedly good given the circumstance. "Considering they only started Japanese six months ago, passing N3 is impressive." It marks a surprising or noteworthy contrast between expectation and reality. として = in the role of. によっては = depending on cases. に関して = regarding.

Q15. 電車の時間があるので、___急がなければなりません。
A) もうすぐ   B) そろそろ   C) やがて   D) いつか

Answer: B — そろそろ
そろそろ = "it is about time to / we should start soon." The train is coming and the time to act is now approaching. もうすぐ = very soon (describes an imminent future event, not the need to start acting). やがて = eventually / in time (implies a more distant future). いつか = someday (indefinite future — wrong nuance entirely).

Section 2: Vocabulary (Questions 16–25)

Q16. このイベントに___するには、フォームに記入する必要があります。
A) 申し込み   B) 断り   C) 確認   D) 判断

Answer: A — 申し込み (もうしこみ)
申し込む = to apply for / register for something. "To apply for this event, you need to fill in the form." 断る(ことわる) = to decline / refuse. 確認(かくにん) = confirmation / to check. 判断(はんだん) = judgment / decision based on reasoning.

Q17. サービスの質を___するために、お客様のご意見をお聞きしています。
A) 解決   B) 改善   C) 影響   D) 進める

Answer: B — 改善(かいぜん)
改善する = to improve / make better. "We collect customer opinions in order to improve service quality." 解決(かいけつ) = to solve / resolve a problem. 影響(えいきょう) = influence / effect. 進める(すすめる) = to advance / proceed with something.

Q18. 彼女は私の提案を___した。「時間がない」と言って。
A) 確認   B) 判断   C) 断り   D) 解決

Answer: C — 断り(ことわり)
断る = to decline / refuse / turn down. "She turned down my proposal, saying she had no time." 確認 = confirmation. 判断 = judgment. 解決 = resolution of a problem — does not fit the context of responding to a proposal.

Q19. もう一度___してから、書類を送ってください。
A) 影響   B) 確認   C) 可能   D) 状況

Answer: B — 確認(かくにん)
確認する = to confirm / check / verify. "Please confirm once more before sending the documents." 影響(えいきょう) = influence / effect. 可能(かのう) = possible / ability. 状況(じょうきょう) = situation / circumstances.

Q20. 現在の___を正確に把握することが重要です。
A) 判断   B) 解決   C) 状況   D) 改善

Answer: C — 状況(じょうきょう)
状況 = situation / current circumstances / state of affairs. "It is important to accurately grasp the current situation." 判断 = judgment. 解決 = resolution. 改善 = improvement — you cannot "grasp" an improvement.

Q21. この薬を飲むかどうかは、医者が___します。
A) 進め   B) 申し込み   C) 判断   D) 影響

Answer: C — 判断(はんだん)
判断する = to judge / make a judgment / decide based on evaluation. "The doctor will decide whether to take this medicine." 進める(すすめる) = to advance / proceed. 申し込む = to apply for. 影響する = to influence / affect.

Q22. この方法では問題を___することができません。別の方法を試しましょう。
A) 可能   B) 解決   C) 確認   D) 断り

Answer: B — 解決(かいけつ)
解決する = to solve / resolve a problem. "With this method we cannot solve the problem. Let's try a different approach." 可能 = possible (adjective, not a verb to "do"). 確認する = to confirm / check. 断る = to refuse / decline.

Q23. プロジェクトを___ために、全員が協力する必要があります。
A) 影響   B) 改善   C) 進める   D) 申し込む

Answer: C — 進める(すすめる)
進める = to advance / move forward / proceed with. "In order to advance the project, everyone needs to cooperate." 影響する = to affect / influence. 改善する = to improve. 申し込む = to apply for — does not fit the context of running a project.

Q24. この計画は___だ。すぐに始められる。
A) 影響   B) 可能   C) 状況   D) 判断

Answer: B — 可能(かのう)
可能だ = it is possible / feasible. "This plan is feasible. We can start right away." 可能 is a な-adjective meaning "possible." 影響 = influence. 状況 = situation. 判断 = judgment — none fit as a predicate meaning "feasible."

Q25. 彼の意見は私の考えに大きな___を与えた。
A) 解決   B) 可能   C) 影響   D) 確認

Answer: C — 影響(えいきょう)
影響を与える = to give influence / to have an effect on. "His opinion had a great influence on my thinking." 影響を与える is a standard collocation. 解決 = resolution. 可能 = possible. 確認 = confirmation — none form natural collocations with 与える in this context.

Section 3: Kanji Reading (Questions 26–30)

Q26. 日本の___は最近変化している。 — How do you read the underlined word 経済?
A) けいさい   B) けいざい   C) きょうざい   D) けいじ

Answer: B — けいざい
経済(けいざい) = economy / economics. "Japan's economy has been changing recently." The on-reading of is けい and of is ざい. This is one of the most essential N3 compound words and appears frequently in news and exam passages.

Q27. ___は国民にとって重要な問題だ。 — How do you read 政治?
A) せいち   B) まつりごと   C) せいじ   D) ていじ

Answer: C — せいじ
政治(せいじ) = politics / governance. "政治 is an important issue for citizens." reads せい in compounds; its kun-reading まつりごと is used in literary or historical contexts, not modern everyday speech.

Q28. ___問題は世界中で深刻だ。 — How do you read 環境?
A) かんけい   B) えんきょう   C) かんきょう   D) けんきょう

Answer: C — かんきょう
環境(かんきょう) = environment. "Environmental issues are serious throughout the world." reads かん and reads きょう in this compound. かんきょう is an essential N3 kanji compound.

Q29. 状況を見て___する必要がある。 — How do you read 判断?
A) はんたん   B) はんだん   C) はんざん   D) ばんだん

Answer: B — はんだん
判断(はんだん) = judgment / decision based on evaluation. "It is necessary to judge based on the situation." reads はん and reads だん in this compound. Note that can also read ことわ(る) as a kun-reading (to refuse).

Q30. 水は大切な___だ。 — How do you read 資源?
A) ししん   B) しけん   C) じげん   D) しげん

Answer: D — しげん
資源(しげん) = natural resource. "Water is a precious resource." reads and reads げん. Do not confuse with 試験(しけん) = exam — a common reading confusion for test-takers.

5 Common Mistakes on the JLPT N3 Grammar Section

  1. Confusing のに (despite) and ために (purpose / because). のに after a plain verb expresses frustrated contrast — the result is contrary to expectation. ために expresses purpose (verb dict form + ために) or cause (noun + のために). Mixing them changes the entire meaning of the sentence. Look for emotional frustration as a cue for のに.
  2. Assuming はずだ means certainty. はずだ is logical expectation based on prior knowledge or reasoning — not a proven fact. "They should be here by now" is expectation, not certainty. Do not use はずだ for things you know directly — use 〜と思う or plain statements instead.
  3. Choosing によって when にとって is needed (and vice versa). によって = "by means of / depending on / due to" (mechanism, variation, agent). にとって = "from the perspective of / for" (personal standpoint or evaluation). 私によって大切だ is wrong; 私にとって大切だ is correct.
  4. Forgetting that しか always pairs with a negative verb. しか is always followed by a negative verb form. 100円しかない (only 100 yen — not enough). You cannot use しか with an affirmative verb. On the exam, if you see しか, the answer choice must include a negative.
  5. Confusing ことにする (I decided) and ことになる (it was decided externally). ことにする marks a personal choice made by the speaker. ことになる marks an outcome from external circumstances. The exam tests this distinction in workplace and life-change scenarios — read carefully for who is making the decision.

FAQ: JLPT N3 Practice Test

What does the JLPT N3 test cover?

JLPT N3 has three sections: Language Knowledge (文字・語彙・文法), which tests kanji reading, vocabulary, and grammar; Reading (読解), which tests comprehension of medium-length texts; and Listening (聴解), which tests comprehension of spoken conversations and announcements. This practice test covers all grammar and vocabulary components of the Language Knowledge section. YoruLearn's adaptive drills target these exact skill areas with personalized spaced-repetition review.

How many questions are on the real JLPT N3?

The actual JLPT N3 has approximately 75 to 85 questions in total across all sections. The Language Knowledge section typically contains around 35 to 40 questions covering kanji reading, vocabulary, and grammar including sentence assembly (文の組み立て). The Reading section has 13 to 15 questions. The Listening section has 18 to 22 questions. Total test time is approximately 110 minutes across two sittings (Language Knowledge + Reading together, then Listening).

What is the passing score for JLPT N3?

To pass JLPT N3 you must meet two requirements simultaneously: a total scaled score of at least 95 out of 180, AND a minimum sectional score of at least 19 out of 60 in each of the three sections individually. Failing any single section means failing the overall test — even if your total score exceeds 95. This means you cannot compensate for a very weak section with strong performance elsewhere. Balanced preparation across all three sections is essential.

What grammar patterns are most commonly confused on N3?

The most commonly confused N3 grammar patterns include: のに vs ために (despite vs in order to), はずだ vs きっと (logical expectation vs subjective confidence), によって vs にとって (depending on vs from the perspective of), ことにする vs ことになる (personal decision vs external decision), and しか〜ない vs だけ (only — but しか requires a negative verb). These pairs appear most frequently in the grammar section questions.

How should I study for JLPT N3 in the final month before the exam?

In the final month, prioritize grammar pattern drilling over new vocabulary acquisition. Use timed practice tests to simulate real exam conditions and identify your weakest pattern categories. Focus review time on patterns you consistently miss rather than reviewing what you already know well. For vocabulary, target the 500 to 700 highest-frequency N3 words using spaced-repetition flashcard review. Aim to complete at least two full mock tests under timed conditions before your exam date.

How is JLPT N3 different from N4?

N4 tests whether you can understand basic Japanese in everyday situations — simple conversations, short messages, and familiar topics. N3 tests whether you can understand Japanese encountered in everyday situations "to a certain degree" — it bridges N4 and the ability to understand natural Japanese. N3 introduces longer reading passages, more nuanced grammar distinctions (like のに vs ものの, or はずだ vs はずがない), a significantly larger vocabulary set (~3,750 words versus ~1,500 at N4), and kanji drawn from news and essay contexts.
