JLPT N4 Kanji List: All 240 Kanji Organized by Topic
JLPT N4 requires 240 new kanji beyond the 103 covered at N5, bringing the total to approximately 343 characters. Rather than memorizing them as a raw alphabetical list, this guide organizes them by topic — body, nature, places, actions, abstract concepts, time, family, and more — so you build connected vocabulary networks that stick. Each entry includes key readings and high-frequency example compounds.
Covers: body & health, nature, places & buildings, action verbs, abstract concepts, time & society, family, nature state verbs — plus study strategy notes
N4 kanji appear mostly in compound words (熟語 じゅくご). Focus on compound recognition: 意味(いみ meaning)、感動(かんどう moving)、最近(さいきん recently).

5 Common Mistakes When Studying N4 Kanji
Memorizing kanji in isolation instead of in compounds. Seeing 感 alone is less useful than knowing 感じる (to feel), 感動 (being moved), and 感謝 (gratitude). The JLPT tests compounds, not isolated characters — always learn kanji in context.
Ignoring the distinction between similar-looking kanji.森 (dense forest) and 林 (lighter grove) look similar and overlap in meaning. So do 速 (fast) and 早 (early — N5). Explicitly comparing look-alike pairs prevents persistent confusion.
Skipping kun-readings because on-readings seem more useful. Many N4 verbs require the kun-reading: 走る (はしる), 泳ぐ (およぐ), 忘れる (わすれる). If you only learn on-readings, you cannot read the most common verb forms.
Treating multiple readings as equally important. Not all readings need equal attention. 頭 is overwhelmingly あたま in daily use, while ず mainly appears in 頭痛. Focus study time on the highest-frequency reading first, then learn secondary readings through their specific compounds.
Studying kanji separately from N4 vocabulary and grammar. N4 grammar patterns appear in reading passages using N4 kanji. Learning 続ける (to continue) at the same time as the ている resultant state reinforces both. Isolated kanji study creates knowledge gaps when you attempt reading comprehension.
FAQ
How many kanji are required for JLPT N4?
JLPT N4 requires approximately 240 kanji beyond those tested at N5. Since N5 covers around 103 kanji, an N4-level learner is expected to recognize and use roughly 343 kanji in total. The JLPT does not publish an official fixed list, but these figures are consistent across major preparation materials. This guide covers key examples from all major topic categories.
What is the best way to study N4 kanji?
Learn kanji through compound words (熟語, じゅくご) rather than in isolation. N4 kanji appear in compounds like 意味(いみ meaning)、感動(かんどう being moved)、最近(さいきん recently)、続ける(つづける to continue). Grouping kanji by topic — as this guide does — builds connected vocabulary networks that make recall faster and more reliable than alphabetical lists.
What is the difference between 森 and 林?
森 (もり) refers to a dense forest — typically larger and wilder. 林 (はやし) refers to a smaller grove or woodland, often cultivated or lighter in density. The visual difference reflects the meaning: 林 has two trees while 森 has three, suggesting greater density. In practice, はやし is also a very common Japanese surname.
How do I remember kanji with multiple readings?
Focus on the most common compounds for each reading. 頭 has two main readings: あたま (the body part — 頭が痛い) and ず (in compounds like 頭痛 ずつう). Learning those two compounds covers both readings naturally and in context. Memorizing abstract on/kun lists is far less effective than encountering each reading in a real word.
Which N4 kanji appear most often in the JLPT exam?
High-frequency N4 kanji on the exam tend to be those used in common compounds across multiple domains: 意(意味 meaning)、感(感じ feeling)、続(続ける continue)、決(決める decide)、選(選ぶ choose)、変(変える change)、最(最近 recently / 最後 last). Verbs and abstract concepts appear frequently in reading comprehension sections.
Should I learn N4 kanji before or after N4 grammar?
Study them simultaneously. N4 grammar patterns like なければならない, てしまう, and causative/passive forms appear in reading passages written with N4 kanji. A balanced approach — learning grammar patterns alongside the kanji they commonly appear with — produces better reading ability and faster exam preparation than studying them sequentially.
The YoruLearn app drills N4 kanji through spaced-repetition compound word flashcards — so you learn each character in its most important context, not as an isolated symbol. Adaptive review surfaces the kanji you find hardest, exactly when you need to review them.
