Learn Katakana: Read Modern Japanese Faster
Katakana appears in product names, menus, games, ads, and imported vocabulary used every day.
Master the 46 base katakana first, then move straight into short loanwords and common real-life examples. This gives you a stable visual map of the script, helps you stop confusing look-alike symbols, and makes it much easier to read menus, labels, brand names, and beginner texts that mix scripts together.
Start by locking in high-frequency shapes such as ア, カ, サ, タ, and ナ, then move into short loanwords.
Katakana Lookalikes and a 7-Day Learning Plan
| Pair | Memory clue | Example words |
|---|
| シ / ツ | Stroke direction and dot alignment | システム / ツアー |
| ソ / ン | Watch the long stroke direction | ソース / パン |
| ク / ケ | Ke has the extra crossing stroke | クラス / ケーキ |
| ワ / ウ | U has the top short stroke | ワイン / ウール |
Katakana becomes easier when it is attached to recognizable loanwords. Practise one row, then read words such as ホテル, コーヒー, レストラン, and スマートフォン. Use the katakana quiz to find which lookalikes still slow you down.
Seven-day sequence
- Day 1: vowels and K row.
- Day 2: S and T rows, with extra work on シ / ツ.
- Day 3: N and H rows.
- Day 4: M, Y, R, W, and ン.
- Day 5: dakuten and handakuten sounds.
- Day 6: small ャ・ュ・ョ combinations and long vowel mark ー.
- Day 7: mixed quiz plus ten real loanwords.
Write characters with the katakana stroke-order guide, then read the katakana words list. The goal is not reciting chart order; it is recognizing the script inside normal vocabulary.
