⚠ ある negative past is なかった (not あらなかった) — the negative of ある is ない, so its past becomes なかった.
5 Common Mistakes
いく → いいた. The た form of いく is いった, not いいた. This is the most common G1 exception — memorise it.
Using ました in plain-form sentences. If a sentence uses plain form throughout, mixing in ました sounds inconsistent. In relative clauses and embedded sentences, always use the plain form: きのうたべたすし (the sushi I ate yesterday) — not きのうたべましたすし.
Forgetting ある → なかった. ある has no あらなかった form. Its negative is ない and its past negative is なかった.
Confusing きた (came) and きた (wore). Both are valid た forms — context tells you which verb (くる vs きる) is meant.
Applying G2 rule to G1 verbs ending in る. わかる, つくる, かえる are G1 — their た forms are わかった, つくった, かえった — NOT わかた, つくた.

Drop the final る and add た. Example: たべる→たべた; みる→みた. All Group 2 verbs follow this one rule.
