Japanese Verb Groups: Group 1, 2, and 3 with Full Conjugation

Japanese verbs are divided into three groups based on how they conjugate. Group 1 (godan/う-verbs) change their ending vowel across five rows. Group 2 (ichidan/る-verbs) simply drop the る. Group 3 contains only two irregular verbs: する and くる. Identifying the group is the first step in any conjugation.

Turn verb-group knowledge into an N5 plan. Take the free JLPT N5 December diagnostic and get a printable 30-day checklist for focused revision.

Use the rule immediately: enter verbs in the Japanese verb conjugation checker, then compare the negative pattern in the negative-form guide.

The Three Groups at a Glance

GroupAlso calledHow to identifyExamples
Group 1Godan / う-verbs / 五段動詞End in any う-row sound except る-endings where vowel before る is a/u/oかく、のむ、はなす、かう、のる
Group 2Ichidan / る-verbs / 一段動詞End in る with い or え sound directly before itたべる、みる、おきる、ねる
Group 3Irregular / 不規則動詞Only two verbs: する and くるする、くる

How to Identify a Verb's Group — Step by Step

  1. Check for Group 3 first. Is it する or くる? If yes → Group 3. Done.
  2. Check the final sound. Does it end in く、ぐ、す、つ、ぬ、む、ぶ、う? → Group 1.
  3. If it ends in る, look at the vowel sound directly before る:
    • i-sound before る (e.g. みる, おきる, できる) → usually Group 2
    • e-sound before る (e.g. たべる, ねる, きえる) → usually Group 2
    • a/u/o-sound before る (e.g. わかる, のる, つくる) → Group 1
  4. Watch out for exceptions. Some verbs ending in -iru or -eru are actually Group 1 (see table below).

Group 1 (Godan) — Te-Form Rules by Ending

The て form of Group 1 verbs depends on the final consonant. These are the 5 te-form patterns for Group 1:

Dictionary endingて form changeExample verbて formMeaning
く→ いてかくかいてto write
ぐ→ いでおよぐおよいでto swim
す→ してはなすはなしてto speak
つ、う、る→ ってまつ / かう / のるまって / かって / のってto wait / buy / ride
ぬ、む、ぶ→ んでのむ / あそぶのんで / あそんでto drink / play
く (行く only)→ って ⚠行く行ってto go — exception!

行く (iku, to go) is the only く-ending verb that does NOT follow the く→いて rule. Its て form is 行って, not 行いて.

Ambiguous Verbs: Look Like Group 2, Are Group 1

These verbs end in -iru or -eru but conjugate as Group 1 (godan). They must be memorised.

VerbMeaningます formて formWhy tricky
きる (切る)cutきりますきってLooks like ichidan; godan
しる (知る)knowしりますしってLooks like ichidan; godan
はいる (入る)enterはいりますはいって-iru ending; godan
はしる (走る)runはしりますはしって-iru ending; godan
かえる (帰る)return homeかえりますかえって-eru ending; godan
いる (要る)needいりますいってHomophone of ichidan いる (to be)

Note: いる has two meanings — "to need" (Group 1: いって) and "to exist/be" (Group 2: いて). Context and kanji distinguish them.

5 Common Mistakes

  1. Treating all る-ending verbs as Group 2. Verbs like のる、かえる、はしる end in る but are Group 1. If the vowel before る is a/u/o, default to Group 1 (then learn exceptions).
  2. Using the wrong て form for Group 1. The te-form depends on the final consonant: かく → かいて, のむ → のんで, まつ → まって. Each ending has a fixed pattern.
  3. Making 行く て form as 行いて. 行く is the single exception to the く→いて rule. Its て form is 行って.
  4. Forgetting that Group 2 ない form drops just る. たべる → たべない (not たべない → たべくない). ない attaches directly to the stem.
  5. Treating する conjugations as regular. する → します / しない / して / した — none of these follow godan or ichidan patterns. Memorise them as a set.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you know which group a verb belongs to?

Check Group 3 first (する/くる). Then: if it ends in く、ぐ、す、つ、ぬ、む、ぶ、う → Group 1. If it ends in る with an i/e-sound before it → Group 2. If it ends in る with an a/u/o-sound before it → Group 1. Learn the common exceptions by heart.

What is the difference between godan and ichidan verbs?

Godan (Group 1) verbs change their ending across five vowel rows depending on the form. Ichidan (Group 2) simply drop the final る — the stem stays the same. Godan is more complex but covers the majority of Japanese verbs.

What are the 5 core verb forms?

Dictionary (plain present), ます form (polite), て form (connector/request), た form (plain past), ない form (plain negative). These five are the foundation of all N5 grammar.

How do you conjugate Group 1 verbs?

Change the final kana to a different row: ます form → い-row; ない form → あ-row; て/た form → depends on consonant (く→いて、す→して、む/ぶ/ぬ→んで、つ/う/る→って).

How do you conjugate Group 2 verbs?

Drop the final る and attach the ending: ます → stem+ます, ない → stem+ない, て → stem+て, た → stem+た. The stem is always the same.

What are common Group 1 verbs that look like Group 2?

きる (切る)、しる (知る)、はいる、はしる、かえる (帰る)、いる (要る) — all end in -iru or -eru but conjugate as godan. Must be memorised.
